Welcome2TheBronx

Outside descriptions — even from “neighborhood news” — stem from statistics and numbers that waive the stories behind those included in the factoids. Therefore, blogger Ed Garcia Conde is changing that with the stories on Welcome2TheBronx, which follows his mantra “You think you know the Bronx — but you don’t!”

His stories pertain to topics that impact people’s quality of life in both the South Bronx and throughout the Bronx: things to do, real estate, transportation, government, etcetera. While he does not report on the crimes or the

Garcia Conde’s 50 most recent articles are largely human interest stories and news stories that could impact residents’ lives — they aren’t articles that feed into safety statistics or police tensions. And at his core, he celebrates the lives of those who live in the Bronx.

Of his 50 most recent articles, 7 were negative, 18 were neutral, and 25 were positive. These were published over a 95-day period, so people would see a negative article once every 13.5 days and a positive piece once about every 4 days. While this is longer than DNAinfo’s once every 3.5 days, the negative to positive ratio is much smaller than — and actually inverse of — other news outlets’ portrayal of the borough.

“I was tired of the negative images and the false narratives, and I realized that nobody was telling our story from within,” Garcia Conde said. “Even though my eyes are biased as well, their eyes are just completely biased, cause they don’t even know the true history or they don’t know the true experience of living in the neighborhood, so how are you actually going to write about it properly?”

His coverage extends beyond self-perceptions of the Bronx and is impacting local journalists and government officials who now see his blog as the reliable source “of record” for the borough. Garcia Conde gets interviewed by local journalists, they rely on his blog for content, and he is filling the holes between dismal statistic after disheartening stereotypes.
